Researching Travel Destinations
Great post in Vagablogging, titled “How researching destination opens doors”:
“So go ahead. Invest some time in making the world a bigger, more varied, more dynamic place. Look at that map on your wall, and find somewhere you’ve never been and never wanted to go– Uruguay, Tajikistan, El Salvador, wherever. Dig up some pictures of the country, read an article or two about it, see if they have any English-language newspapers. After thirty minutes, I admit, you still might not want to go there– but it probably won’t be because the place is uninteresting.”
I find that when I can’t travel, the next best thing is always reading about some place I’d never considered before.
I got this habit from researching places BEFORE I traveled there, but one day realized that — since anticipation is always half the fun of any trip — it’s never too early to start learning about a place you hope to visit in the future.

Rosie Vela “Magic Smile”
“Taking a break from a successful modeling career, Rosie Vela recorded Zazu (1986), an album for which she wrote 8 songs, including ‘Magic Smile’ and which featured Donald Fagen on keyboards and Walter Becker on guitar. This video was shot in Barbados.”
I bought the cassette tape of Zazu off Ebay in maybe 1999. This was probably the best song on it. Cool to finally see the video. Also enjoyed Rosie’s back-up vocals on ELO’s Zoom album.

Vitamins May Shorten Your Life
From BBC News:
“Research has suggested certain vitamin supplements do not extend life and could even lead to a premature death.
A review of 67 studies found ‘no convincing evidence’ that antioxidant supplements cut the risk of dying.
Scientists at Copenhagen University said vitamins A and E could interfere with the body’s natural defences.”

M&Ms, Cognitive Dissonance, and the Monty Hall Problem
This is our favorite news story of the year so far, since it brings together the Monty Hall Problem, M&Ms, and monkeys:
“The economist, M. Keith Chen, has challenged research into cognitive dissonance, including the 1956 experiment that first identified a remarkable ability of people to rationalize their choices. Dr. Chen says that choice rationalization could still turn out to be a real phenomenon, but he maintains that there’s a fatal flaw in the classic 1956 experiment and hundreds of similar ones. He says researchers have fallen for a version of what mathematicians call the Monty Hall Problem, in honor of the host of the old television show, Let’s Make a Deal…
If the monkey chose, say, red over blue, it was next given a choice between blue and green. Nearly two-thirds of the time it rejected blue in favor of green, which seemed to jibe with the theory of choice rationalization: Once we reject something, we tell ourselves we never liked it anyway (and thereby spare ourselves the painfully dissonant thought that we made the wrong choice).
But Dr. Chen says that the monkey’s distaste for blue can be completely explained with statistics alone. He says the psychologists wrongly assumed that the monkey began by valuing all three colors equally.”

Bloggers Are Like Rappers
Fun post on Copyblogger:
“Rappers are notoriously prolific, some of them releasing mixtapes on a monthly basis, delivering torrent after torrent of catchy street bangers….
Bloggers are also prolific, some of us producing upwards of 1,500 words per day or more. Our material might not be ‘funky @ss $h*t,’ but we do come up with it ‘like every single day.’”
